Coleman is a native of Blackpool Lancashire. She attended Arnold School in Blackpool. In her time as headgirl, she scored straight A grades for her A-Levels. Steven Moffat, the producer of Doctor Who confirmed in a 21st March 2012 press conference that Coleman will portray Matt Smith's character after Karen Gillan left. Moffat selected her for the role due to her ability to work most effectively with Smith and could talk faster than Smith.
